BABY GRAY WHALES IN BAJA

Hundreds of Pacific gray whales return to their traditional breeding and birthing grounds in sheltered San Ignacio Lagoon on Mexico's Baja Peninsula every winter. Friendly and engaging, they are often intrigued with humans, swimming right up to our open boats. We may see mothers "showing off" and sharing their babies with us as we frequently interact with them up close. The whales entertain us with breaching and spy-hopping, and we sometimes observe mating behavior as well. The Pacific gray whale migration from Alaska's Bering Sea to the warm waters of Baja's Pacific lagoons is the longest mammal migration on Earth. Nearly hunted to extinction in the past, these gentle giants have made a dramatic comeback and today show little fear. When you come with us to Baja to see them, you'll be forever spoiled for whale watching because it doesn't get any better than this! Once you look into the eyes of these magnificent, spiritual creatures and hold your hand out for them to touch you, your life will never be the same!

We will meet you at the airport in Loreto and taxi to our beach front hotel in Loreto. Once we are settled, we’ll meet up for a trip briefing and then walk into town for dinner. The next morning, after breakfast at the hotel, we will drive to the San Ignacio Lagoon, stopping in Mulege for fantastic tacos! Once settled at the Whale Camp, we’ll meet up for Happy Hour and dinner followed a briefing on these amazing whales. We sleep in bungalows along the edge of the lagoon. After breakfast, we load up in our pangas to head to the viewing area in the Lagoon. We have two sessions each day with the whales, with a break between for lunch. The second day, after the whales, we travel back to the charming town of San Ignacio. This town is one of the early mission towns. The church itself was built in the early 1700s! We stay in a hotel there and dine outside near the town square. After breakfast, we board our vans again and take our time driving back to Loreto with several stops along the way to have more delicious tacos, see another mission, petroglyphs, an iron church building and some beautiful beaches on the Sea Of Cortez. Back in Loreto, we have another night in our hotel, a final dinner in town and plenty of time to explore or shop before we head back to the airport and home.

Is this trip for me?

This trip involves some walking, riding in an air conditioned van for several hours, and 4 hours per day in an open boat with an outboard motor and Captain. The Whale Camp can accommodate dietary restrictions. Bungalows are double occupancy with twin beds, hotels are double occupancy with 2 queen beds.

Accomodations.

Imagine waking up on the lagoon where the whales live. The phrase “whale camp” is hardly descriptive enough to describe where we stay on this trip. The bungalows are set up as two person cabins. Think summer camp but without all the kids running around screaming and it’s not summer. The lagoon is a magical place to relax in the evening with a margarita or some wine, great food, new friends and adventure just a skiff ride away. Our first night in the lagoon is settling down in our cabins having great food and getting ready for whales in the morning.
